Letter from the President
it’s never too late to keep moving forward
I recently spoke with an employee who shared frustrations about the current season of her life. She felt caught between her dreams and reality, viewing that gap as a personal failure, especially when comparing herself to peers on social media. I empathized. The tension she described between achievement and self-comparison is completely understandable, especially now.
Cost of living is high, and milestones many once considered rites of passage—living debt-free, buying a home, retiring by 65—feel increasingly out of reach for many. Optimism about the future can feel at odds with the financial realities of today.
So I asked her a few questions:
Are you living your day-to-day life in a way that supports your goals five or ten years from now? Do you have a plan that allows you to take small, manageable steps toward something bigger?
She paused. Then she explained that she was paying down debt, contributing to savings, and working toward her dreams, but unexpected setbacks had slowed her progress. To her, the delay felt like failure.
From my perspective, I saw something very different. I saw a young professional doing everything within her power to stay aligned with her goals. When something knocked her off course, she adjusted. Each day, she chose discipline over discouragement. The progress may have been slower than she hoped, but it was still progress.
I reminded her that discomfort and comparison can cloud our perspective. The sacrifices—the things no one posts about—are often what make the greatest long-term difference. It’s okay for challenges to feel painful. It’s okay for progress to feel slow. But struggle does not erase growth.
Unexpected expenses, setbacks, and delays are part of the journey. A delay is not a defeat.
This spring, I encourage you to revisit your goals with both optimism and realism. Ask yourself: What am I doing today that supports where I want to be tomorrow? And if I feel stuck, who can I ask for guidance?
At Canopy Credit Union, we’re here for every step of your journey. Whether you need encouragement or an adjustment, as long as you don’t lose sight of your horizon, it’s never too late to keep moving forward.
