generations of growth

For nearly 50 years, Veda has trusted Canopy Credit Union through life’s biggest moments—from raising a family to navigating life after the loss of her husband. What began as a simple need for a local financial partner quickly grew into a lifelong relationship built on care, trust, and financial education.

“Things were very different back then,” Veda recalls. “You’d apply for a loan and wait a week to know if you were approved. With technology, everything is so quick—but what hasn’t changed is how the team at Canopy treats you.”

Veda and Riley VanZee.

Over the years, Canopy has been a steady presence through every stage of her life. After her husband passed away in 2011, that support became even more meaningful. Veda grew up during a time when women had limited access to and agency over finances. Without her husband managing household funds, she felt lost. But she also knew there was somewhere she could always turn to: Canopy Credit Union.

“They’ve helped me with so many things.” From learning how to use her phone to answering questions about her account. “I’ve never felt like I was a problem.”

That sense of care has been especially important during challenging moments. When Veda encountered an issue with a credit card payment that a company claimed hadn’t gone through, a Canopy team member stepped in to advocate for her and help resolve the situation.

Even when Veda didn’t feel confident managing her finances, Canopy helped guide her to a future grounded in financial confidence.

Over time, that trust grew into something even more powerful—a desire to share it with her family.

Veda brought her granddaughter, Riley, into the Mallon branch as a teenager to open her very first account. For Riley, it was a small but exciting step toward independence.

“It was so cool to have my own money,” Riley says. “I could go to Taco Bell or the mall and actually pay for things myself.”

More than 10 years later, Riley is still building on that foundation.

As a young adult—navigating college, work, and life on her own—Riley leaned on Canopy to help her understand credit, starting with her first credit card.

“I didn’t really know how it worked,” she says. “But they made it easy to ask questions—even the ones I thought were silly—and I always left feeling confident.”

From building credit to handling fraudulent charges, Riley says Canopy has consistently turned stressful situations into manageable ones.

Their family’s journey is a powerful reminder that financial confidence doesn’t just impact one person. It creates a ripple effect that reaches further than we could imagine. With the right guide, one generation can help set the next up for success, growing confidence, stability, and opportunity for years to come.
